How to dry flowers?
Preserving dried flowers is a good solution not only to keep them longer, but also to enjoy a natural and welcoming decoration throughout the year. The best known method is to let the flowers air dry. However, this process takes longer, so if you are betting on a faster result, you will have to opt for one of the other methods. Refers to drying with a desiccator (with or without a microwave) To give you a head start on this process, we've explained the two most popular techniques below.
Process 1 / Dry the flowers outdoors
To use this drying method you will need:
- rope and scissors
- clothesline or hanger
- flowers
How to make
- Start by choosing your flowers, favoring those that are not fully open, as they can lose their petals during drying.
- Remove any foliage from the stems. If, on the other hand, you want to enjoy a little green in your creations, you can leave some leaves on the stems.
- Gather the flowers by species and make bunches (5-6 flowers per bunch for the smallest flowers).
- Tie the ends of each group of flowers with twine.
- Then tie the lumps upside down to a clothesline or hang on a hanger. Eventually you find that the stems are too long, you can cut them a little.
- Finally, hang the bunches in a dimly lit place (to maintain the flower's color, as direct light causes the petals to disappear).
- Then wait 3-4 weeks until the flower petals are completely dry and crispy.
Process 2 / Dry the flowers in the microwave
Necessary materials:
- flowers
- desiccator (with silica gel)
- water
- microwave safe container
Method of preparation
- First start by removing all the leaves from the stem. Fill the container with a thin layer of desiccant (moisture-absorbing substance), silica gel is one of the most popular. You can find gel at any craft store.
- Now place your flower on this layer.
- Cover with an additional layer of silica gel so that the flower is completely buried under the desiccator. If your flowers are small, place several in the same container, just make sure they are all covered with the substance used.
- In the microwave, place the container with the desiccator and flowers and a glass of water.
- Heat in the microwave in 30-second intervals, checking the state of the petals each time. This process takes about 2-3 minutes for the flowers to dry.
- Once the flowers are dry, insert them back into the silica gel and let them sit for 24 hours.
Another option, if you don't have the time or patience to wait several weeks, try the microwave drying technique.
