Why do white towels get dirty?
Wrong amount of soap
If you use a lot of soap on a regular basis, your white towels will start to develop a grimy appearance due to excess soap buildup. On the other hand, if you don't use enough soap, your towels won't get clean properly and could become grimy over time due to dirt buildup.
So, read the instructions on the laundry detergent bottle and use the recommended amount when washing the white towels.
Wash in hard water
First, hard water is rich in minerals like calcium and magnesium. Over time, these minerals can harm your clothing, leaving white fabrics looking grimy, yellow, and stiff. However, if you are not sure if you are being affected by hard water stains? Here's a way to find out:
- Fill a clear container with a lid to ⅔ of its size with tap water (a glass water bottle or mason jar is perfect for this).
- Then add a few drops of liquid soap, close the lid and shake vigorously.
- After that, put your container down and check the water. Whereas, cloudy water with minimal bubbles is an indication of harder water. However, clear water with lots of bubbles on top is an indication of softer water.

Mixing White Towels with Colors

The same goes for synthetic fibers, made from yellow synthetic polymers. If you choose to use chlorine bleach, be sure to follow the package directions carefully.

Bathtub or large basin
Sodium bicarbonate
Detergent – good quality
distilled white vinegar
Wool dryer balls (used in clothes dryers)
Step 1: Dissolve the Baking Soda for a Pre-Soak
First dissolve 1 cup of baking soda for every 1 bucket of warm water or a large basin. Then soak the towels for about 1 to 8 hours, depending on the level of grime.
If you want extra whitening power, mix laundry soap in the water before wetting your towels. Add only the amount of soap you would use in a normal wash cycle, then let it soak for 1-2 hours.
Step 2: Wash with Vinegar
First of all, wash the towels in the washing machine as you normally would, but add 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar during the rinse. Just put the vinegar in the opening of the fabric softener when you put the washing powder.
The traditional method for cleaning towels is to use lukewarm water, but with today's advances in laundry detergent formulas, your towels can be just as clean in cold water. Cold water temperatures also prevent seams from shrinking and help colors hold.
Step 3: Dry in the Sun
So if you really want these towels to stay white, dry them in the sun. The sun is like a natural bleaching solution for towels and other white fabrics.
Alternatively, you can tumble dry your towel. Try using woolen dryer balls
